is it hard to convert a 2wd truck of buggy in to 4wd? and does it cost alot of money how much. and does it matter what brand of stadium truck the car is depending on hardness of the conversion.
thanks
ok kool what are some small modifications that i could do to the slash to make it go fast im not looking to spend anymore than 100$ on modifications
Hi Noah,
This could be done, but I think it will be way more trouble than it is worth.
When a truck or any rc car id designed they allocate space for motors, diffs, drive shafts and drive axles. If the rc unit that you want to modify does not have mounts or room for these additions you really will have a difficult task ahead of you!
I would not recommend it!
Hi Caleb,
We will do a review of upgrades to the Slash soon, but to answer your question now. All you need is the velineon 3500 brushless motor. Available at Amazon.com for around $80 bucks!!
View motor here
is losi parts alot more than team Associated parts?
Hard question to answer Noah!
If you can be more specific on rc type and part specific, eg, electric motor, nitro motor, ESC etc we would be more than happy to look into a price comparison for you.
Cheers
RC Car Review Guy
Why is it better to have a brushless system? What is a good battery for the slash with a brush system? How fast could you get up to with the brush system?
Speed! Speed! Speed is why it is better to go with a brushless system.
Just adding the Velineon brushless powerplant into a Slash with a 7 cell battery will see your Slash get up to 40+mph
Now add a 11.1V LiPo battery and you will be looking at an electric driven truck that will do 70+mph
What is the recommended battery for the slash with a brush system??
Hi SlashNewComer,
You can keep the stock battery, but your speed gains will be limited. To get maximum speed go with the 11.1V LiPo battery. Sure they are more expensive but 70+mph has to have a price for an electric truck!
RC Car Review Guys
What is a good web site where I could get a battery and a charger for $200. I am looking for longer battery life and lots of speed.
It is hard to beat Amazon.com
hey i just saw on you tube that traxxas is making a e revo and a slayer 16th scale!!!! but why can’t i find it on their website?
Hi Noah,
The word on the street is that they could be expected to released to the public in mid June, 09!
Fingers crossed!
Hey, I just bought my this (my first truck) a few days ago. It seems sweet/fast and all of that. I think I have a 7-celled battery (Cost me like $65) and on it, it says “4600″. Is that good? Now, I have it on 50/50, how much faster does 70/30 make it?
My neighbor has a Nitro that goes around 40 mph. What can I do to compete with his Nitro or do Slash’s not go that fast. How fast SHOULD my Slash be going right now?
(If It doesn’t sound like I know what I’m talking about, sorry,
I have only been in this hobby for 3 days!)
Sorry for putting 2 comments but I just looked and my battery is 8.4V.
Thanks!
Hi Derek,
Thanks for stopping into RC Car Reviews.
Nice choice with the Slash, these bad boys can really shake their tail with some easy upgrades that can really compete with some nitro machines.
The ultimate upgrades for the Slash are a Velineon™ brushless motor and a 11.1V LiPo battery, if you have both of these rockin your truck you really can pull around 80mph +
Check out our RC Car Store for more Slash goodies here
I love having it be waterproof. Does the Brushless motor make it not waterproof?
Thanks for answering!
I have a question, I ahve a stock slash and am looking to upgrade. What would you buy first if you were on a limited budget to make it go faster? the velineon brushless motor or the 11.1 lipo battery?
Thanks for the input
Hey Derek,
Interesting question. We are running the velineon brushless and didnt even think if it is still waterproof! We have not had any trouble with it getting wet, but then again we are not testing like these crazy cats – Traxxas Slash Waterproof
You can pick up your velineon brusless motor in our Amazon store here
Enjoy it!
Hey Trose,
If your budget is limited try the motor first. It is a cheaper option to get your Traxxas Slash smokin! Check out our Amazon store here
Enjoy your new power!
Thank you for the earlier response, one follow up question with the purchase of the upgraded brushless 3500 Velineon motor. I went to my local hobby store and I was told I need to buy the electronic speed control device also. Is the true or can I just pop the motor in and ride? I was under the impression I just had to buy motor and I was ready. This may seem like a basic question but I’m just getting into this hobby, what a great website you have! Very helpful
Thanks
Hey Trose,
Check out the Traxxas site on the Slash (http://www.traxxas.com/products/electric/5805/trx_5805.htm). Traxxas themselves make it very clear that the Slash is ready to take the Velineon.
From the Traxxas site, “The Traxxas Slash is built for extreme Velineon™ brushless horsepower (sold separately). Simply bolt it in…….”
The electronis speed control (ESC) in the Slash is better than you would find in most high end machines. We run brushless and 11.1V LiPo battery with the stock ESC and we have not had any troubles! Fingers crossed!
Just bolt one in and let it rock!
I just got my Slash and, as a beginner to the car world, absolutely love it. I’ve been told that the Novak 8.5 Havoc brushless would be a good upgrade that would really step up performance without it getting uncontrollable (for a beginner). Any opinions out there?
Hey Archcsr,
Thanks for stopping in on RC-Car-Reviews.com! We have not got any reports on the Novak 8.5 Havoc brushless in the Traxxas Slash. Sorry!
Traxxas did make the Slash to take the Velineon brushless system and that is without doubt the most popular upgrade we have seen and use in the Slash.
If anyone has any reports on the Novak alternative please share your thoughts.
Hope you enjoy your Slash!

I just got a slash myself. its GREAT! i was looking 4 info on brushless power 4 my truck and found your site. i was greatly dismayed to see you advising newbs that the xl-5 will handle a brushless motor. traxxas says the DRIVETRAIN is ready.NOT ESC! FIRE
Trose,
We have been informed that it is recommended that you upgrade your ESC to run a brushless motor. Otherwise you are at risk of your truck overheating and a possible fire.
Please make sure you upgrade your ESC.
Maverick,
Thank you for the details regarding the ESC and brushless motors. We will inform the readers.
We must be very luck as I am running the Velineon and Li-Po on the xl-5 and have not had a problem. I guess we should upgrade!
Thanks for the update and information, I’d rather be safe than sorry. I will purchase the upgraded ESC to potentially avoid any damage to my slash or worse cause a fire. Your site still ROCKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thank you
Thanks for the support Trose!
Hi guys, i have never owned a truck and would like to get one. I have been looking at either a slash or a rustler simply because they are cheaper. If i had to get one, what should i get?
Hi Sean,
Either the Slash or the Rustler will be a smart decision as your first truck. Performance is pretty similar, so it may be a personal choice for the style of truck you like.
Personal I like the aggressive stance of the Rustler. They seem to handle high speed corners a little better, especially if the surface is a little rough. But I will get a beat down for saying that as the Slash is a very popular choice of truck.
Let us know what you decide and why.
RC Car Guys.
I would love a rustler, but the nly reason that i havent chosen a rustler as my truck is because my friend has one. Three of my friends have trucks but they are all different, so i dont want to ruin the trend.
Hey Sean,
You could always add a custom body to a Rustler to make it a little different. Another option, however more expensive is the might E-Revo.
Otherwise I think you have pretty much sold yourself on a Traxxas Slash my friend!
Well i decided to get the slash, since i love the acual CORR and WSORR. I have been going to those races since i was two and only missed one. Last year they had slash try it and all the little kids (4, 5, 6,) were going as fast as they could and smash into each other. So I figured that they were pretty durable. I really didnt care about the speed as long as it’ll take jumps. Plus my friends said that it would be cool to have and i wanted to be different than their stampede, e-maxx, and rustler.
Thank you helping me make my choice! This site is awesome!!!!!
Hi Sean,
Sounds like you and your crew have the entire Traxxas lineup rocking!
The Slash will take the jumps and when you are ready with a few mods you can really get those bad boys moving!
Keep us up to date with how you like your Slash!
Hey guys, I want to get a body for my slash, but the body I want is the Pro-Line Carnage Desert Rat Body that breaks away. The problem that I am facing is that I want a custom paint job for it, but I dont know if anyone will do that. I cant paint my own so I have to get someone else to do it, can you help me out?
Hey Sean,
I would say the best option would be to contact some of your local hobby stores and clubs to see if they know of someone that does custom paint for rc units. Also see if you have any airbrush artists in your area, their work is normally super quality and your Slash will look RAD!
If anyone knows of a company or individual that does custom paint jobs for rc units please drop us the details in a comment for everyone to read.
All of your ideas would be GREAT, but the nearest hobby store is about 20 miles away and there is no race club for them here. I don’t know any airbrsh artists either. The only way i could get this to happen is by ordering them off the interenet.
Hey Sean,
If you need to buy the body, they are available through Amazon and are on sale, check em out here – Desert Rat Carnage Edition Clear Body: Slash
Another option besides painting is using a sticker skin, here is one super sick shop we found online for you – Traxxas Slash Skins
admin it seems you are misinformed as said earlier you have said the xl-5 speed control can run the vxl motor and that the xl-5 can run a 11.1v lipo!
however to run a BL motor like a vxl you will need a brushless esc! and the xl-5 can only take a 2s lipo or a 8 cell nimh/nicd batttery!
really because on the traxxas web site http://www.traxxas.com ya it say that it can.
slashes are amazing!!! ever since i got my slash a month or two ago 2 of my friends got one! two more are probably going to get them too! one said that they would sell a non traxxas product to get it. im the only one tho with a brushless tho, but my friends are going to get it eventually, maybe in time for the torc aces next year! i would have been racing in the latest bark river races but i had a transmission problem and my parts did not come in on time. i may be racing at crandon but who knows?
right now i think that everyone in the r/c hobby wants a slash! i know that oter brands are coming out with short course trucks but i believe that the slashes ar #1!!!
just bought the slash put the bigger gear that came with it ..question can I replace the motor (brushless) only or do I have to replace the speed control also thanks
Hey im ordering a Traxxas Slash it ought to be in on 9/9 or 9/10 what are some good mods you can do as soon as you open the box with out buying any thing.
and is the ESC bolth Brushed and Brushless.and how much does a 11.1 lipo cost. thanx
Hey CJ,
Not sure of any mods you can do without buying anything, being electric driven it is a little different to nitro powered.
Mixed reports with the ESC, we were running the stock ESC with a brushless power plant and 11.1 lipo battery (before it was stolen out of our car), however a lot of people have made comments on here that this should NOT BE DONE!!
You can pick up 11.1 lipos starting at around $70 bucks, check out Amazon
for some great deals.
Hey thanks for the reviue i got my slash on the 10th and its over all the best bang for the electric car world buck !!
every one has been saying that the stock speed control can be used brushless.
and if so where is the third wire?
i have a CC sidewinder and im thinking of getting a brushless motor for it.
and was wondering what motor is best, and what battery gives you the most power but i want it to run for the longest time posible without a charge
thanx
just bought the traxxas slash and 4200 venom bp , replaced pinion gear with 23t …… it rocks im a beginner so in my opinion with the upgrades available its an awesome truck to transition from novice to advanced ….. awesome truck!!!!!
Just a little FYI to admin; You CAN NOT just buy the VXL motor and throw it in the slash. You WILL need an ESC upgrade to go brushless. The stock XL-5 ESC has a 15 turn 540 motor limit.
I got a slash and i want to make it faster. What is the cheapest way to make it faster. Im thinkin about 50$ max. Thanks
